When trying to determine the authenticity of a Navajo rug, one of the first things you should check is the warp. Warp strings run vertically and make up the foundation of the rug. Navajo rugs are made on a continuous loom that contains the actual warp threads. You can check this visually and by running your hand along the side of the rug to feel whether the warp threads run the length of the rug or whether they’ve been cut. However, in Mexican-made copies, the cut warp threads are hidden, making it more difficult to detect.

It's a textile made for tourists in Guatemala and southern Mexico. It can be cut in the places where warps aren’t woven. It is genuine Navajo and a variant the Storm Pattern. It is not in my possession, but a rug of this quality should be around $100 per square feet. This is a double twill saddle blanket. These blankets require skill in weaving, and they don't always get the value they deserve. The auction value is $350-$600 and the retail price is $750-$800. Two Grey Hills rug purchased at Toadlena Trading, 1984. I decided to spend more and buy a rug made by a master weaver. I sadly lost the original information on the weaver years ago when I packed up the rug. Is there a way to locate the weaver by looking at the design, etc. Any help would be most appreciated.

They are usually shown face-frontand are tall, slender figures carrying rattles, cornstalks, etc. There are someelements of some sandpaintings but these rugs are not used in ceremonies.

It looked more like the similarly colored, simply woven baby blanket (one of four I insisted on sleeping with for years) that I had dubbed “car seat blankey” because it spent most of its time snuggling with me on the short trips to preschool, or longer rides to my house in the country. But who was I to be so discerning? I’m no expert in Native American history! So I decided to give it a chance, and read more about the item before I am so quick to pass judgjement. To my delight, I discovered that it was chock full of historical relevance and had an incredible provenance!
