Navajo blankets can be considered an older form Navajo weavings. They are made around 1840-1890. These textiles, which were soft and easily wrapped around the body, could also be worn. Note: Saddle blankets, which are smaller and more expensive than wearing blankets, are highly collectible. Even at peak production, Navajo weaves were difficult to find. A blanket could take up to a whole year to weave, not to mention the time spent raising the sheep for the wool.

Early blankets from the mid-1800s are the rarest, with some forms only having 50 or so known surviving examples. The rarity of Navajo blankets makes them highly prized by collectors, many of whom consider a fine Navajo blanket to be the cornerstone of their collection. The combination of rarity and collector enthusiasm is reflected in the high prices of these textiles. In terms of visual appeal, Navajo blankets have a level of artistic sophistication that rivals any form of modern art. Whether simple bold stripes, as seen in early blanket examples, or complex “eyedazzler” geometric patterns when synthetic dyes became available, Navajo blankets are studies in balance, composition, and contrast.

Weavings that incorporate images of objects and people in their designs have slowly gained in popularity since the early days of rug-making. Such Pictorial Rugs may include small representational images within a larger geometric design, or may consist primarily-even solely-of a picture. Small pictorial motifs such as feathers, arrows, animals and other common objects may have held some personal significance for the individual weaver. As the modern trappings of Anglo culture filtered onto the Reservation, strange new objects such as cattle, trains, American flags, and letters of the alphabet caught the fancy of some weavers.
