Navajo rugs have a side seam cord. To keep their straight edges, Navajo weaver often uses a twisted selvage line. A fringe does not provide a reliable indicator of whether a sideselvage is present. However, a presence of a selvage is a good indication that the cord is Navajo. Mexican weavers keep straight sides by using three to four warps or more, or even a single thick warp, or rope. If you notice a rug with thicker outside warps, check the ends for fringe or evidence that the warp ends are sewn back in.

Many people who would never visit the Reservation appreciated the exotic designs and laborious handcraftsmanship of Navajo weaving. Proponents of the Arts & Crafts design movement found that the bold, geometric designs harmonized beautifully with their simple furniture and handmade accessories. By 1896, C.N. Cotton, a trader in Gallup, New Mexico had issued a catalogue in an effort to expand his market to eastern retailers. Other traders, most notably Lorenzo Hubble at Ganado, Arizona and J.B. Moore at Crystal, New Mexico, followed up with their own catalogues in the early years of the new century, focusing specifically on rugs. Navajo weaving had quickly gained a national audience.

Selvage lines run along the sides of the rug. The line is actually two or more threads twisting around each other and interlaced through the edge of the fabric. Selvage lines help the weaver maintain a straight edge and give the rug a finished look. Although the presence of selvage lines helps indicate the authenticity of a Navajo rug, the absence of these lines does not necessarily mean the rug is not authentic. It is possible to see selvage lines in a photograph.

The warp ends will hang from each end. You will need to darn the ends into the rug's body in order to make a Navajo Navajo rug. This is done by attaching a set of non-functional end cords. You might also attach side cords to complete the fake. To determine if a fake Navajo rug exists, the easiest and most reliable way is to examine the ends. This will allow you to check if the warps have been tucked in or if they are actually continuous. If they are tucked back in, each other warp area will have 2 threads. The rug may not be genuine if it has a bundle of warps near the edge. Rarely will Navajo rugs have such bundles. Even then, there would be only two or 3 warp threads in the bundle. The bundle would also contain only one warp yarn. As I mentioned, most Navajo rugs include side cords. Moreover, virtually all Navajo rugs do not have fringed warp threads at both ends.

However, the overall condition can determine the price point for the ancient ones. For example, damaged ones with fading issues or worn-out will have a relatively lower price tag. But even with all those issues with the rug, it will be priced higher than the brand-new ones just because it is ancient.
