There are many reasons for the popularity and high cost of Navajo rugs. This article provides all the details you need on Navajo rugs as well their origin, weaving patterns and methods. When you research native American history you'll find information about one tribe called the Navajo. This tribe began their economic life weaving rugs that were later known as Navajo rugs. These rugs were strongly associated with their culture and traditions. The Navajos initially began their weaving journey by using only a few pieces. However, they eventually expanded their unique designs across the country. They weaved them with their hand-knotted features and a vertical loom. These unique features made weaving more popular across the southwest.

The impetus behind this trend came primarily from Anglo collectors, traders, and government agencies that had a sincere desire to upgrade the quality of Navajo weaving and return to traditional, pre-rug patterns. The resulting rugs were not literal copies of older pieces, but were creative variations on banded designs using a wide palette of newly developed vegetal dye colors made from indigenous plants, as well as new, subtly colored chemical dyes. Mary Cabot Wheelwright, founder of the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe, probably started the “vegetal revival” by providing weavers around Chinle, Arizona with the new dyes and sketches of old weavings.

There are two exceptions for the "no frill" rule. Germantown rug fringe is an added feature that is added to the rug when it is being woven. These fringes are rare, and you'll find a good photo of one below. A fringed antique Germantown can be worn down or removed entirely but does not alter the structure of its textile. Gallup throws are an exception to this rule. These are small pieces, usually measuring 18 by 24 inches in size and are woven locally in Gallup. Gallup throws are made on a cotton weave. The weaving is cut off and then knotted. This leaves a fringe only on one side. There are many Gallup throws on the market that were sold to Sante Fe train passengers. These are a nice addition for a collection. They can be purchased for $40-50, but I've seen them selling for as much as $250 on eBay.
